Tagged!

I've been tagged by the lovely Designers' Brew — a first for me. I'm supposed to post the fourth picture in my fourth picture folder. Unfortunately, I don't store pretty pictures of interiors (I just post 'em as I get 'em). So the only things in my photo folders are my personal pictures. So that's why we're looking at the shot above. It was taken in Portland, ME, in 2007. While it's not a particularly exciting shot, it does advertise something I could never pass by! And from a photography perspective, I find it hard to pass by an old neon sign.

Here's another picture from the same folder, that fits a bit better into this blog. This was some old historic homestead (in Massachusetts, I think) that my friend and I drove up to, only to find it closed. I shot this through the window. It's pretty, isn't it?

Good bones

Strong evidence to suggest that if you have gorgeous windows, it doesn't much matter what you do to decorate.

The Judge

LOVE the look of this table and chair set, but don't the chairs seem too lounge-y for dining?

The art makes me think I'll need this:
But it's kind of cool.

Pendant show-offs

OK, I know this shot is totally set up (no one needs that many pendant lamps over a table for four), but I like it anyway. It looks like it was taken in a creaky palace somewhere.

from Ditte Isager

Pendant love

Once again, pendant lamps strut their stuff (while floor lamps, the bastard stepchildren of the lamp family, are nowhere to be found). Last week I admired some pendant lamps lined in gold, and now I'm admiring these lined in red. Note how the accessories on the table mirror the look of the lamps. Slick. There's also some wacky mural action going on. (This is in the same apartment as this.)

Patterns

Since it's kind of on topic after my previous post, I thought I'd post this picture from Flora Douville's beautiful blog. There's really something magical in peeling paint.

As a bonus, here's a lovely old beveled window, also from Flora.

Old paint

We like a nice aged wall here at Roseland Greene, and this place is chock full of them. I like how the untouched spots are in different places in different rooms. Here's it's just the ceiling.

Terrific wide plank floors. And I like the eclectic furnishings.

Stairway to aged wall heaven! A land without lead or asbestos.

Old wood

The shelves are made from "snow fence wood from Wyoming."
Awesome. Nice floors too.

White floor reality

The endlessly inspiring Anna of Door Sixteen has painted her back room floor white. Not an easy process, as she details. But it looks so fresh and heavenly. Anna is totally neat enough to pull this look off. I can't wait to see how the room is decorated! (Follow the link for many more photos.)

Simple dining set

Are those French cafe chairs comfortable? I so like the way they look.

from Remodelista

Playroom

Yes, I know this room is poorly accessorized (tell me that's not the saddest vase of flowers ever), but it's a concise little modern loft. I like that swing lamp over the dining table. But while I do love bright colors, sometimes I wonder if they don't just come across as childlike (despite the sophisticated renovation job and furniture)?

The magic factor

Know what makes this space?

No, not the art wall (and that's a shocker, coming from me). Not the Ant chair. Not the Random light. Not the task lamp (although it's a pretty great-looking task lamp). And not even the dog.

It's the rug. The way the rug balances the other elements, warms them and humanizes them.

I'm so serious.

Madwoman in the attic

I'm kind of fascinated by this wallpaper from Gallant Tales. It suggests a mentally unstable genius locked up with a ballpoint pen. But in a good way! Maybe that's just me...

The map-like patterns remind me of the work of Nigel Peake.

Dark glamour

Dark rooms can be very intriguing. Especially lit with pendant lamps lined in gold.

Rock star

Those shelves look so empty and sad! But I love the mirror and fireplace in the hip setting.

Color combo

Not a residence, obviously, but I love this color combination. And those pendant lamps are great.

from Antoine Baralhe

Old signs

I love old signs (as anyone who had traveled with me knows), but I have sort of mixed feelings about them being used for decor. Salvaging some old bit of vernacular craftsmanship to fill up a loft was once an exciting notion, but I think the chintzy "antique letters" peddled by Pottery Barn or Anthropology have somewhat cheapened the effect.

Glass on the windowsill

After taking everything down due to a leak problem, I have returned my collection of blue glass bottles to my windowsill. This picture, alas, is not them. Obviously, glass looks great with light coming through it. But my glass collection is not of this quality. And I have a fine view. I'm pondering...

(My window frames, alas, don't look like this either.)

The mix

Deliciously aged wall, Thonet chair painted yellow, cool modern cylinder table, tile floor. Sexy.

Dream books

I hear that in France it's tradition to custom-bind your books (that's why French bookcovers tend to be so plain). These shots (from the exciting Parisian sojourn of The Selby) show an incredible collection of custom covers for the mysterious "NRF." While I tend to think of custom-bound books as solid blocks of dyed leather, these show remarkable variety. They seem like art objects, and I'm curious if the covers live up to the spines.

from The Selby. Follow the link to wonder how this couple obtained the library. (As always, the site doesn't explain.)

White warmth

Despite the blanket, this photo evokes a warm climate. Gorgeously shaped fireplace, elegant table, and of course I like the hint of a portrait.

Panorama

Well, the original photo was a bit of a panorama, so to deal with Blogger size, I'm cutting it into two parts. In part one, you can see the two (!) red task lamps that seem to be having a conversation, plus the gorgeous bookshelves.

In part two, there's a better look at the terrific chairs, the hammered tray table and the red rug which matches the lamps. Pretty stylin'!

Green glass

Here's a pretty, summery picture (complete with glowing sun!). And it makes me think of this bathroom, which I'm crushing on this week.

Plaid wall

I don't know if I'd ever actually want a plaid wall, although it's certainly seasonally appropriate. But this is my blog and I can post a cute dog if I want to!

Art shelf, no art shelf

There's a lot I like about this kitchen, but I'm especially noticing the art wall (surprise, surprise). There's a combo of art that's hung, and art that's leaning on a shelf. Great look!

via A Cup of Jo

Modest

Look at this unpretentious little bedroom.

And how about this ramshackle kitchen? No showing off here!

Oh wait.
Both those rooms are in here. Now I really love them!

Color love

This was my favorite Selby post in a while. I'm not into toys like these people, but I like bright colors.

Love the look of this bookcase. I've seen a number of bookcases with the edges one color and the inside another, and I think it's a good look.

And I'm gaga for this bathroom. If I was rich and artsy, this would totally be my tile choice. Love!

Studio style

Not sure about the actual art, but a bright modern chair mixed with old wood furniture and white walls is a good bohemian look.

from Tim Evan-Cook

Floorboards

Yesterday's post of old floorboards made me think of the home of Kat Heyes, where the floor is truly the star! (The pale, muted colors add something as well).

A lot of the furniture has thin black steel legs, which also shows off the floor. It looks so good that I'm including this photo, despite the fur throw.

I like this shot of a staircase, which takes a moment to process, visually. I'm such a sucker for old floorboards.
